Winnington Park edge close encounter against Springfields UCLAN

ALASTAIR Buckle’s late winner pinched the points for Winnington Park against basement boys Springfields UCLAN, ending a run of back-to-back defeats.

The hosts were made to work for their win at Sir John Deane’s College.

Captain and leading marksman Pete Evans took his season’s goals-tally to 30 when he put Park in front, but their Preston-based guests restored parity soon afterwards.

Buckle bagged the winner, leaving Winnington seventh in the standings with three rounds of the campaign to go.

KAREN Morgan’s hat-trick helped Winnington Park’s ladies return to winning ways on Saturday after three successive defeats.

They beat Didsbury Greys 4-1.

She broke the deadlock midway through the first half, adding a second from acute angle before half time.

At the other end net-minder Helen Egerton, nursing a cracked rib, was in fine form to keep the hosts’ two-goals lead intact.

Morgan completed her treble before Park scored the goal of the game when Eileen Miller applied the finishing touch to a sweeping seven –players move.

But they proved no match for promotion favourites University of Manchester the following day, Sunday, when they went down 4-2 fielding a depleted team.

Morgan and Ellie Capstick scored for the visiting team.

WINNINGTON Park men’s second string never recovered from a disastrous start at runaway league leaders University of Lancaster, shipping three goals inside the first seven minutes.

The visitors roared back though.

Mark Leigh twice flicked in from penalty corners to reduce their arrears, then he turned provider for Mike Dodd who beat his marker before supplying an assist for Kieran Berrington to restore parity.

Andy Palin in the Park goal kept the scores level before an unfortunate deflection before the break gave Lancaster the lead once more.

The hosts continued to use the pace of their counter attacks to their advantage, scoring early in the second half to make it 5-3.

Park’s bid to make a second comeback failed, and they conceded a sixth goal late to leave Lancaster flattering winners.
